Why do people say islamic militants hate us because of our foreign policy?

The lists of grievances in the Muslim world are endless and replenishing. We have this misconception in the West and especially in America that whatever reason those terrorists hate us must be because of something we’ve done. It is ingrained in our political mindset and is widespread in our academia. But the truth is that militant till this day groups use events that took place since the end of the last Caliphate to justify their acts of terror. Bin Laden himself chose to attack America on 9/11 because of the defeat of Muslim forces at the gates of Vienna on September 16th, 1683. So every incident after that including the creating of the state of Israel was and still is used as a pretext to justify their attacks and to recruit as many fighters as possible. As cliché as it sounds they do hate us because of our freedoms. They can’t stand the fact that our culture distracts their youth from their Islamic faith and teachings. Their ultimate goal is to restore the caliphate purged from Western pop culture which they find decadent and immoral.

So why is it so hard to believe they despise our way of life not for ambiguous reasons but because it is infiltrating theirs? Is it because if they realize and confirm what the threat is, that they would have to do something about it (i.e. continue the war)?
to (robe and wizard hat):

Why he chose the date september 11th. Not the reason for why he attacked us. Look it up. They use events that took place centuries ago to justify their actions today along with many events that happened in the 20th and 21st century. Don't be a fool.
