Why do people resort to name-calling when discussing religion, or lack thereof?

Why do we have to insult what someone else believes in just because we don't feel the same way? I'm not just talking about people that believe in a god, I'm talking about people that don't believe too.

I've read through questions on religion on Y!Answers, discussed it with friends, and I hear all the same names. "Oh, you're going to hell because you don't believe in god" or "oh, you believe in some invisible guy sitting on a cloud? You're stupid."

Why can't we just say, "Oh, that's what you believe? Okay then." and move on? Seriously, I'd like to know how name-calling benefits anyone when discussing religion.

thats the saddest side of a person who cannot accept that humans were given free- will by god. it hurts to hear name-callings specially when you're sincere to what you say. the best thing we can do is simply to follow what christ himself said: DO UNTO OTHERS, WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO UNTO YOU., BE PEACEABLE WITH ALL MEN., GIVE BREAD INSTEAD OF STONE., most of the time these people will NAME-CALL you because they cannot win you. simply give them your peace.

because when discussing religion the involved people believe in different things or nothing at all. and people are afraid or against difference of change which when talkin about different religions people tend to disagree and resort to low forms of themselves and just expose what they really are, afriad of change and difference like i said before. this is mainly why sorry f its confusing

Cause name-calling gives pleasure to the caller via release of anger/irritation which cannot be attained via arguing cause they don't have concrete proof to smack the other person with(if they do have concrete proof, then they just smack the person with the proof so they don't have to rely on name-calling). Some people get angry/irritated if other people don't believe the same things as they do. Yeah, it doesn't just happens for religious issues. It also happens in other issues that cannot be proven or disproved (in a concrete manner) as well (eg. global warming)

People are just really immature... Religious people get angry that they can't hide behind their religion when approached by non-believers, so they call them sinners or worse. And non-religious people like to pick at peoples religion to either get a rise out of them defending themselves or because they're jelous and try to make the other person feel bad about something they belive in. People are weird! Lol

Some people just have strong beliefs where the idea of suppressing others and that their views are the only valid ones are condoned whether it be through religion or through lack of religion.

Some people just think they're right and everyone else is wrong, and can't argue reasonably. Maybe their parents forgot to teach them and they were babysat by the TV?
