What with the "oil crisis" we are in, people keep singling out NASCAR as a "waste" of fuel that could be used for more "productive" purposes.

Well... WHY ONLY NASCAR?

What about:

United Midget Auto Racing Association
Vintage Auto Racing Association
Antique Auto Racing Association
Prince George Auto Racing Association
Sprint car racing associations.
Utah Salt Flats Racing Association
NHRA / IHRA
Indy Racing League

Not to mention the THOUSANDS of "Car Clubs" across America that go out for Sunday drives just for the heck of it.

Then, we haven't even mentioned:

BOAT racing
AIRPLANE racing
MOTORCYCLE racing

What else can we add to that list?

Please explain WHY NASCAR seems to be the only ones ever taking the "hit" for "unproductive" use of fuels?

NASCAR is the biggest therefore the target. Also many of the other racing series do not use gasoline. IRL has used alcohol since the 70's.

Its stupid, in fact, FAR more fuel is burned by the spectators driving to these events than by the cars in the event anyway. You might as well ban football with this logic.

They're uneducated. Thats why..

The fuels used in Nascar are reformulated totally differently than consumer fuels, and the use of such fuel has never had an impact on the use, price or availability of normal consumer fuels.

A lot of people try to quote facts about nascar in the 1970's about cutting the race length to conserve fuel. Cutting the length of races back in the 70's was purely a PR move on Nascar's part. They only saved a couple hundred gallons by this move - but it sure did draw attention!!!

Fact is - It's down to the general consumer to save fuel, not one racing entity.

Not against Nascar its just simply the name associated most with these kinds of events. Its what comes to mind when discussing racing.Yes we are aware that those cars use a different fuel but the people driving to these events are thousands and they don't.I think if we don't get a handle on some thing in the future then we all will have to make drastic choices about how and where we drive. We need to keep those monies here instead of sending it out of the country,I think most agree with that we just have no plan and we needed one 5 years ago.At this point in time you will admit we are frustrated with many things and see not help on the horizon and yes angry too.We want to see the future brightly but more and more we don't.Just a thought.
