...ugly people? Is it because most people know someone in their immediate family or circle of friends who they like or love, but don't want to accept that the person is terminally fugly? Rather than crush the ugly persons hopes and dreams, they'd rather just modify their perception of reality? Similar to handicapped people, either mentally or physically. They aren't less of a person, they're 'differently abled'. It's a pity ploy to distract someone from realizing the truth so they don't lose hope. Maybe I can distract someone of the opposite sex with my charming charismatic personality before she realizes how ugly I am. It doesn't work.
Here's what I'd like for an answer. "Yes, you're probably ugly, that sucks for you. There's nothing you or anyone else can do about it, your life will be miserable. Please go kill yourself."

In real life, ugly people are attracted to beautiful people and repulsed by themselves and others like themselves. They just lower their standards and drink heavily to modify their eyesight.
