Why do people disrespect the humanities and social sciences?

I'm an undergraduate majoring in psychology, and I have 2 basic groups of friends: one group consists of people earning their degrees in the humanities/social sciences (Political Science, History, Philosophy, Anthropology, etc.) and the other group consists of people earning their degrees in the physical sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.). My scientist friends are extremely condescending toward my humanities friends and me; they say our careers aren't important, that our work is "easy", and that it's an arbitrary waste of time.

For those of you who are pursuing careers in the humanities, teach them, or are just interested in actually reading a book, have you ever dealt with such neurotic criticism from those in the sciences? If so, why do you think this occurs, and how do you deal with people like this?

PS- I see nothing but merit in both science AND the humanities. Without the humanities, the whole world would be like China; without science, there would be no technological advancements/medicine/anything that we know about the world today.

I respect all people who offer me fries with my meal, unless they're the pushy type, but humanities grads are unlikely to push it on me because they're more like "how'd I get here" rather than "if I push real hard to raise sales I might make it to store manager!"
