Why do people care about sports teams with their city name?

For instance, most hockey fans in Pittsburgh right now are going nuts about the Pittsburgh Penguins. None of the members of the Pittsburgh Penguins (including the managers or coaches or anything) are actually FROM Pittsburgh (and indeed, most aren't even from this country). Do Pittsburghers just care about it because their city name is in it? It seems really trivial... enlighten, please.
I'm not asking why people care ABOUT sports, I'm asking what makes something "their city's team". None of the Dallas Cowboys are from Dallas, so why does Dallas happen to like them so much (as opposed to just a random team)? The name?

At least in high school sports, you're rooting for your friends or at least people representing your school. A professional city sports team has nothing to do with the city. So why appreciate your city's sports team specifically?

Umm if you are a hockey fan than of course you are going to be happy that your city's team is winning. If you are not a sports fan period, than this is something you will never be able to understand no matter how much someone tries to explain why they are excited about sports to you.
