I'm just curious. if this was true, then almost everybody in the small town that I live in in South Dakota should be renting instead of having bought their home. People here live paycheck to paycheck. It's just how it is. Average pay for my area is $8-$12 an hour and people own their own homes and have families and support them. It would be nearly impossible to tell somebody up here that they cannot afford to buy a house if they have to cash in their $5,000 401K in order to help with the down payment. Really? We pay $400 a month for rent right now and the house that we are trying to buy would be $430 a month....we are just unable to come up with $8,000 instantly. So does that mean that we should just rent forever and never have the chance to buy a house? I know houses have to be kept up but this is a simple town with low standards for housing perfection compared to corporate america. Average homes in this area are 40,000 to 80,000. Are there misconceptions about the area you live in?
