Why do people always reach for the "race card" when you discuss illegal immigration?

I find when discussing illegal immigration, it is always a matter of time before someone cries "racism." Last time I checked "illegal" isn't a race. Why is this the only defense they can come up with? It it because breaking the law has no valid defense and the only way to refute it is to blame the ones trying to inforce it?
