Pakistan should nuke the Arabs

The feelings are not reciprocated though. Many Arabs still regard the Pakistanis as vassals. They conquered them, therefore they are a lesser people. In her book, The Trouble with Islam, Irshad Manji tells how an Arab student let the cat out of the bag. She was giving a lecture in the USA when a group from the Muslim Students Association turned up to barrack her. She asked her audience why, if Islam is a 'straight path', there are differences its practice in the Middle-East from that in Pakistan:

'Why the difference in practice?' shouted a member of the MSA from the back of the room. 'Because Pakistanis are not real Muslims. They're converts. Islam was revealed to the Arabs.' At this, his South Asian cohorts spun their heads away from me and towards him in horror and hurt.

Manji was later approached by a female member of the MSA, asking for advice on dealing with Arab racism in the organisation.

Similar anecdotes can be found in internet forums for Muslims and Pakistanis. Arab racism and assumption of superiority is an underlying feature of the relationship between Arabs and other Muslims. Anyone who has worked in the Middle East will be familiar with this. A few years ago, I was working on a big project in Saudi Arabia. I noticed the ethnic division of labour in the large company that I was working for. Pakistanis were usually to be found doing unskilled manual jobs. I never saw them in the offices. After a month on the project, I realised that I would need some help, so I asked colleagues back in the UK if they fancied a spell in Saudi. A British Indian friend of mine replied, "I'd love to come and give you a hand but they wouldn't take me seriously. They'd expect me to be outside, digging the road."

The contempt in which Pakistanis are held by many Arabs is barely concealed. Even when Arabs intervene to help their Muslim brothers, in Afghanistan or the Sharia provinces of Pakistan, it is Arabs who call the tune and take the decisions. Under the Taliban, the Wahhabis such as Bin Laden soon established a dominant position and by 2001, were effectively running the country.

Deep down, many Pakistanis realise that the Arab establishment looks down on them. Yet still they remain loyal. They protest against the injustices done to their Muslim brothers in Palestine and against the American occupation of the sacred soil of Saudi Arabia. Worst of all though, they blow themselves up, claiming western invasion of an Arab country as the cause.
