Nuclear weapons exist because at one time, we felt that they may become an important strategic weapon that would give us leverage over our enemies. However, that secret got out and the Russians were the next to acquire "the bomb." From here, it filtered down into many nations such as Iran, India, Pakistan, North Korea, France, England, Israel, etc.
Now, the only reason to have a nuclear weapon is so the other guy with a nuclear weapon won't attack you. It is one of those things that we all wish everyone would get together and say "We do not need them anymore. Let's all agree to dismantle them and never build another." However, this will never happen, so we have them on the MAD principle: Mutually Assured Destruction. This means that if you launch one, I'll launch one, then you'll launch more, and I'll launch more, and we'll both be obliterated.

Nuclear weapons exist because they give a country the power to destroy another country. Meaning they fell in control and safe.
I think China and Russia are considering using nuclear weapons against each other, but I'm not exactly sure.
They're a thread because 1 nuclear warhead can take out a city. And there are usually 6 warheads in an IMDB missile.

Because now there is the technology (surprisingly very simple technology) countries can use this a means of power. For example If the USA has nukes China must then say if we are going to be the next superpower we must also have nukes. Then you have countries in hostile areas that feel they must have them to deter their neighbours such as Pakistan.
The country with the most nukes is Russia, much more than the usa which has the 2nd largest amount. Although many of Russias are unaccounted for. This is unofficially because high ranking members of there defense have sold them onto other countries and groups/organisation. There are actually many hidden around the US from the cold war. This was because if there was a nuclear attack in Russia a team could be deployed within a very short time to set one off in the states.
Thiis is all based on KGB informants and operatives that have defected.

Nuclear weapons exist because the U.S. needed a weapon that could be dropped one time( but it took two) and get a country(Japan) to surrender. Russia discovered half through spies in the Manhattan Project and the other half after WWII when we started sharing intelligence with each other. It is not the country that is the problem the only ones that would be a problem are Russia and China, we don't need to worry about them it is who they might sell these WMDs to. Russia doesn't even know where some of their nukes are. Nukes are threat because of 3 reasons.
1) amount of destruction the first nukes used in warfare on Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed the cities. Now one warhead has the ability to destroy 100 square miles and more.
2) amount of fallout/radiation the fallout will be blown by the wind till it hits rain. It could start in Nova Scotia and travel up to iceland and over to England. It is unpredictable how far it could go.
3) A nuke does not even have to be near earth to do damage.
One warhead detonated at a height of 300 miles over the middle of the U.S. would emit a electrical field so intense that it would destroy all computers and electrical appliances from Mexico City to Montreal, and Washington D.C. to Los Angelos.
