Why do my sent items show up in my inbox in Apple Mail?

I use Apple Mail for my Gmail account and for some reason all my sent items show up in my Inbox in the Apple Mail program. It seems that whenever I send an email through gmail.com rather than Apple Mail, it automatically puts it in my regular mail inbox in Apple Mail. How do I fix this?
