why do my crickets keep dying?

I have a ten gallon tank that I keep my crickets in I have two wet rags in there for water and ground up cat food with calcium mix i have small tubes and egg cartons covering most of the bottom. i dont change the rags out very often because they get dirty so fast i usually have about 35-50 large crickets in there at a time and they live fine for about a week then 2-5 die a day there is plenty of food and water in there. is space the problem??
how many crickets should i keep in there and how to i "strengthin them?"
