Why Do My Blackberry Messengers Say `Pending`?

I just got a blackberry, and I didn't have to download BBM, i dont know if that is right, i just entered a username and was on. Also when i add my friends it says `Pending, waiting for authorization` i dont know if this is just because they havent accepted my request yet or if something is wrong. Help Please!
