Why do most verizon phones have a required data package?

Most of them are $9.99 or higher (per month). Simple phones like the LG enV2 now require one. They never did before, or did I just miss it? It seems like Verizon came up with this as a way to get more money.

they require it because this is something that verizon has been planning on doing for a while.. but they held off and let ppl decide if they wanted it or not.. but there were so many ppl who went over on usage that it was easier to require the plan than dealing with all the overages and charges and explaining them to ppl.. if a customer has no need for internet, then they dont need a phone that does internet, is their thinking.. same for BBs.. you dont get a BB if you have no need for the email and internet- the data plan for the phones is just a smaller version of the BB plan
