Why do lincoln town cars not go as fast as the old ones?

Im looking into buying a town car but i noticed that the older ones, around 1999 or 2000, have a higher top speed. why is this? did they start putting in smaller engines to improve mpg or is there different models that have bigger engines? thanks for your help
 
well in the 80's they used 5.0 SOHC V8's ..... but they have started using 4.6 SOHC V8's since they mid 90's... i think they realized that the cars were geared towards older folks so they tuned the engine to get the best MPG possible instead of power and torque.... but im sure with a little work you could tune it yourself to make it go faster than the old ones
