Why do I see few 3-speed bikes?

I just recently bought a Globe / Specialized 3-speed bike for $650.

I did some research online and found barely ANY modern 3-speeds.

They are mostly vintage, and I'm feeling like I bought an odd bike.

Any pointers from those Bike Pros out there?
 
There are many bikes made with a 3 speed hub. They have been around for a long time, early 1900's and are trouble free. They are used a lot on cruiser bikes to allow more gears but keep the classic cruiser look. They are available in 7 speed and as high as 14 speeds but tend to get very expensive at the higher gear ratios.
