Why do I need a memory card for my tmobile highlight phone?

I have pictures on my phone that I want to get on the computer and so we hooked up everything and it said I need a memory card. I understand we need a memory card for music but if the pictures are already on my phone.............why do I need a memory card just to transfer them? Is that right?
