Why do I lose my Internet connection when I chat with a friend?

So, I have this friend and I do know him in person, and every time we chat on msn or facebook IM and Im pretty sure every existent chat, my internet connection fails.. he says it happened a few times with a friend but it happens every time with me. Why does this happen? and how can I fix it or can he fix it? (without stop talking or blocking him of course)
