A few answers:
1) make sure the structure/frame inside can support its weight
2) make sure it doesn't sway violently in winds and can withstand storms
3) so it doesn't sink into the ground; soil can only support so much weight and for the largest of buildings you must dig very deep to a very firm base ground so you don't sink into the ground (like the Leaning Tower of Pisa)
