Why do I get sharp stabbing pains when I lay down a certain way and when I breath in at the same time?

Long story short, if I'm laying down, usually on my left side ( and sometimes my right) and breathe in, I get a very sharp pain on my left side, and it only hurts if I breathe in deeply enough, whereas I have to take really fast, short breaths to stop the pain. This also keeps going if I sit up and breathe, and the only way to make it go away is by breathing very fast.
What is causing this chest pain and how do I stop from happening?
Thanks to all who help solve this dilemma.
