Why do I get random sharp pains in my head?

Every so often I'll get a random sharp pain in the top of my head, adjacent to my ear. It's usually on the left side, but sometimes it happens on the right. It's just a sharp pain. It almost feels as if someone is directly poking the top of my brain with a needle, but it only lasts a second or two. I first experienced it once when I was only 10, but it stopped until recently. I'm 18 now and the needle is back. It happens sometimes weekly, monthly, or every few minutes. I believe the intervals to be irrelevant because they're so unpredictable. I've heard that it might be stress, but that wasn't a professional opinion, so I don't know if I believe it. If you have a medical background or for some other reason know what you're talking about, please help me understand this. I'm not worried, but I'm very curious and frustrated.
