Why do GIFS in Chrome lag?

What's the deal with gifs in Chome, Internet Explorer and possibly Safari and Opera (never used it) ? They play too slow. I'd gladly use Chrome over Firefox but it seems to be the only browser that plays gifs at normal speed.
