Why do films set in antiquity (i.e ancient Egypt and Rome) have the actors speaking with British Accents?

I was watching the Prince of Persia and was reminded of this phenomenon. In a few scenes some of the characters were even speaking with a Cockney accent!! How dumb is that?? I know that ancient persians never spoke that way. These films are produced in America, intended for American Audiences, and the cast, for the most part, is American. To me, this seems ridiculous.
Why not speak american english with a middle eastern accent?
