Why do cyclists ride their bikes on a main road?

I'm not one of those people who are like "I hate people who ride bikes on the road" but I just want to know why you guys choose to ride on a main road. You guys are going about 20MPH on a 35MPH road. I'm fine if you guys stay in your bike lane but if you are in the middle of the lane, you are creating a hazardous situation for not only yourself, but the other motorists around you. First of all, not everyone knows the hand signals on a bike. Sometimes bikers just turn left or right without signaling. Second, is it really that hard to stay as close to the side of the road as possible? What if some impatient driver tries to overtake you on a blind curve and gets in a head on collision by another car? I find it annoying when bikers just stay in the middle of the lane causing traffic on a main road. Think about it like this. Do you want an elderly person walking in front of you in a narrow hallway when you are trying to get to an appointment? That's how some of us motorists feel.
Before anyone says anything, I do know the bike rules. Just know that those bike rules aren't going to save your life. Also, can you guys ride in a peaceful neighborhood where there are not many cars?
