Why do console game prices go up with each new gen of console while PC games remain...

...the same? I started gaming back in 1993 at the ripe age of five. Back then, the Super Nintendo was a major source of joy for me. Games back then cost roughly $30-40. Then the N64 came out, and the prices remained the same. The playstation did about the same thing. Then the Playstation 2 and XBox came out and prices ramped up to $50. And now the 360 and PS3's games all cost $60. Why was there a raise in the prices of games, and why did they decide to keep $59.99 the standard price even though oftentimes some of the games are really complete crap? I want a money-smart answer, not "these people are just greedy jerks." If there isn't a legitimate reason, then why do they continue to keep prices high?

Because the consoles are generally priced to break even and they hope to make their profits through licensing agreements with the game developers.

As long as people keep buying them at this price, they'll keep them there. The fact is, they are just greedy. If they could get people to pay $80 per game, they would. Gaming has become (arguably) more popular within the last few years so they're able to raise the price knowing people will still buy them.
