Why do compendiums of short stories not sell well?

I'm mildly curious. I have a family friend who is a literary agent who I talked to about it and in his opinion you would be incredibly lucky to get such a thing published. I love writing short stories - anywhere between 1000 and 10,000 words and it's annoying. I realise I'm probably nowhere near good enough to get published BUT I think people are really missing out on reading some excellent stuff. I'm thinking primarily Philip. K. Dick and Poe. "The Eyes Have It" and "The Tell-Tale Heart" are just 2 class examples.
Is it because they aren't studied in schools these days. Is it a cultural thing? I'm in the UK by the way - maybe they sell well in other countries?
