Why do colleges care so much about sports/extracurricular activities?

I did Field Hockey for 9th and 10th grade. I am not going to do it next fall, 11th grade. I had a really hard time keeping up my grades and we didn't practice at our own school so we couldn't have study hall. I am in a college prep club/homework help thing at my school. They say extracurricular activities are very important in college. I get really good gpa's (ex: 3.9,3.7) and I'm taking Pre-AP classes and I'm going to take AP next year and as a senior. I REALLY want to get into Boston University. What are my chances if I do no after school activities?
I'm also in the video program at my school. We put on a morning show and we are funded by STCC, a locally respected college. I think thats considered extracurricular because we spend hours every week putting together videos.

You still have chances. It's not as if you don't do anything, you won't get accepted into schools. Extracurricular activities show that you're more than just a student who does homework all day. Schools like students that are well-rounded. Well-rounded students tend to be more social and willing to get involved in campus activities.
