I found myself just the other day looking at an icy pole and wondering why the classic shape of one of these things incorporates a couple of grooves down both sides. I thought initially it may have something to do with making them easy to get out of the moulds, but that doesn't really hold up when you think of all the ungrooved ice-cream, fudgesicle, paddle-pop types, or all the special shaped ones.
