Why do Christians and other theists demand so much respect for their beliefs?

A lot of you may be offended by this question, but I really don't see why. Christians disrespect my non-beliefs all the time, and yet are extremely affronted when I question theirs.
How is a religious view any better than a political view, or a view on which sporting team is best? People insult others beliefs when it comes to that sort of thing all the time, and yet nobody cares.
Why is religious opinion different? For a long time I thought telling a person their God did not exist was similar to telling a small child it isn't really Santa who puts the presents under the tree, but I then realised how patronising it was. If theists are so solid in their faith why would it bother them if someone questioned it?

Ok, my little rant is over. I will just take this opportunity to apologise to theists who are not like that- I know a few are are very happy to debate with me, and share my opinion. This rant is only directed at those who seem to think questioning their belief is the height of rudeness.
