Why do certain religious people dismiss the theory of evolution? Do they lack...

...proper education? I am Atheist so i obviously believe in evolution, but last year i met this girl from Texas and she didn't believe in evolution. This baffled me because i am from the north so i had never met anyone who believe in creationism and intelligent design before... I guess i am just curious as to why some people would dismiss this theory when 99.85% of America's earth and life scientists believe that the theory is valid.

"By one count there are some 700 scientists with respectable academic credentials (out of a total of 480,000 U.S. earth and life scientists) who give credence to creation-science..."

Even if someone believes in God, how could they dismiss a highly supported and accurate theory? I know a common argument might be "Well its only a theory, creationism hasn't been disproven either", but a theory is valid as long as there is no evidence to dispute it and if it is highly supported and has been tested using the scientific method repeatedly. With creationism, there is no evidence of it at all whatsoever! A theory is basically a fact, in that, if evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, then the hypothesis can become accepted as a good explanation of a phenomenon.

Why would someone believe something with absolutely no valid proof to back it up? that is just irrational.

Additionally, do these people also believe the world is flat and that its the center of the universe, like Aristotle thought? (I hope not because he was obviously wrong and the world is NOT flat, and we are NOT the center of the universe!).

Their misinterpretations of the Bible lead them to reject objective reality. Sad. True religious beliefs can never be in conflict with scientific truths. Truth cannot conflict with truth. Which is why the teaching of my Church doesn't conflict with any discoveries of science.
