Why do bike riders do this on the bike trail?

Often I see bike riders pedalling along on the bike trail, and here in Oregon we have wide bike lanes, about 4 to 6 feet wide, so they have plenty of room. Still, they insist on riding right on the line, as far left as they can get, forcing cars to veer around them into the oncoming lane. What is the point of this? When I ride my bike I stay as far to the right as I can, to keep as much distance between me and traffic as possible. Are they making a statement, or are they just inconsiderate jerks? Or both?
