Why do babies have their palms open when they are calm?

I never really did notice it before until i was taking pictures of my mom holding my baby boy and i was looking trough the pictures, in every single picture he had his palms wide open and was completely calm.

Is it what all babies do?
Is it a sign that they are healthy?
