Why do authors use stereotypes?
Does it enhance the writing?
Or does it help compare/contrast the characters?

Im writing an essay on stereotyping in novels
and I'm not too sure.
 
Simply. They know from studies and experience how their audience will react to certain kinds of stereotypes. This is especially true in novels a author writes that the author hopes might turn into a series or movie.
