Why do authors use exaggeration so much in tall tales?

why do authors use exaggeration so much in tall tales?
oh and what makes exaggeration humorous?
 
That's the point of a "tall tale". You are expected to make it the biggest, most elaborate story you can. If not, no one would read it. What is the point of reading a story, if you are expecting a fantastical tale, if it's going to be something that happens everyday?
 
Serious answer:

If they didn't, then they wouldn't be "tall tales."

Example: Paul Bunyan chopped down trees. He wore a flannel shirt and a wolly hats. Hung out with a dog.

The end.

Not much of a story without his being very tall and very strong. And taming an equally giant blue ox made this tall story even more interesting.
