Why do authors make the wording in children's books so Hard for them to understand?

For example Thomas the Tank books - I read to a 3 year old and I have to make up my own words - he would never understand the story if I didn't make the changes'
 
You'd be surprised. Kids can infer the meaning of words very easily-- way more easily than we can. And if you leave in the original wording and encourage him to ask you when he doesn't understand, he'll build his vocabulary much more quickly.
