Why do Anglo American cultures and Mediterranean familes handle debates differently?

I come from an Italian-Greek Family and I am currently dating an Southern Anglo American girl. I noticed that in her family, they dislike debates and see it as offensive if someone challenges their statements. It doesn't make sense to me. In my family if someone challenges what you say and call you out, it is in jest and they expect you to challenge them back with a witty or intelligent comeback. There are no hard feelings and everyone knows the debate is merely friendly.
I tried to do this in her family and me and her brother almost came to blows. It was nuts! I was only kidding with him and thought that he would've understood the humor. Is this how it is with most Anglo American familes? Do they take things too seriously?
