Why do Americans take offense in discussing money or age?

Americans will talk to strangers about their wife, kids or their friends, very intimate things. but if you talk to them about how much money they make, or how old or how much they weight they will take offense! why?
 
Everyone and every culture is different. I would guess there are things that you take offense over as well.

Money is a personal issue and so is weight and age for some.
