Why did Verizon service go out for all of VA yesterday?

Everyone that had Verizon in the state of VA and some surrounding areas of some states signal all went out. The phones wouldn't work at all... Why did this happen? Verizon didn't even tell us a thing about it.. Booo Verizon! Lol
