Why did they call the 1098R so..

Good point. I assumed it's a model 1098. It doesn't go by cc's. For example, model 999 it has 998 cc's. I believed only the 999R has the true 999 cc's.

Maybe, Ducati has a plan for a new model, 1198, in 2011.

Just my opinion.
 
they didn't wanted that the 1098 would be linkt to the 999, but more to the 998.
so no 1099 but 1098.

same counts for 848 is really 849.5cc, so they could have named it 849, but same reason, want it to link to 748 more than 749....
 
it's a tradition ducati has whenever they make an R series bike. It's only produced for adherence to racing rules in production classes. hence the 749r was actually 849cc and the 999r was punched out 100cc as well.
