Why did the Lord command Moses to "exterminate" entire cities? (Joshua 11:20) ?

It would appear that the Lord God condones EXTERMINATION of people. Joshua 11:20 RSV. Do you find this shocking? How can ANY Christian justify this? Little wonder the Middle Eastern countries hate the Jew. After all, if nothing else, the bible is the Jewish history book written by their own people. Your views please?
..Yes Joshua 11:20 actually uses the word "exterminated" in the revised standard version RSV.
The shocking condolence of so called Christians--actually endorsing these Satanic act of barbarism--today, in 2011, is a depressing thought in deed. No. --God may have the power to commit mass murder on hundreds of thousands of Cananites ..who are actually today's middle eastern people, but that does not make it right. If this is an example of "Gods love"...I think I'll pass.

When He did, it was after giving the ungodly people of those cities 400 years to repent of their ways. (By way of perspective, that would be back to the time of the Jamestown colony) During this time God allowed His own people to be kept in slavery in Egypt while He gave the current inhabitants time to repent. These people were into sacrifice of children to their false gods and many other perverse practices. They weren't like your nice neighbors down the road. And they weren't the ancestors of the current Arab peoples. (they had moved to the east) God showed remarkable patience and mercy to these people. Extermination is the only way to have kept future generations from continually seeking revenge. When God says enough, He means enough.

You will have to ask GOD that. I do NOT know the mind of God!

As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
MARANATHA! Come, Lord Jesus, COME!

Why did the Lord command Moses to "exterminate" entire cities?

Its because they needed extermination. Thes people would through there own children in the fire for sacrifice. Just think how they would be now if they were allowed to exist.

the thing is, we Christians don't have to justify it. We didn't order it. Plus God never has to justify Himself. He is God. He gave mankind laws to live by. If they don't live by them, be gone.

The Canaanite people had completely and permanently turned away from God a long time before Moses. God was using them, allowing them to construct cities in the promised land so that the Israelites could settle there when the time came. With their purpose over, there was nothing left to do but destroy them as judgment for their unfaithfulness.
