Why did the Federalists remain pro-British during the War of 1812?

I understand that the Federalists were pro-British while the Jeffersonian Democrats were pro-French, yet I don't understand how the Federalists could have opposed the War of 1812 when it was clear that something needed to be done. The British had blockaded part of the coastline in an attempt to keep the Americans from trading with the French, they attacked the ship the US Chesapeake, and most importantly they continued their policy of impressment, which seized and imprisoned American sailors. So how did the Federalists justify their stance in remaining pro-British?
