Why did Suzuki use those stupid half round rubber plugs in their valve covers?

What's the purpose of those plugs anyway? All they do is leak oil. Why didn't they just cast them solid like everything else on the motor?
 
They have nothing to do with taking the cams out, they are the necessary result of needing the room to use a boring bar when boring out the camshaft bearings during manufacture.

You can buy new plugs or just coat the top and bottom of the old ones with silicone sealer the next time you have the valve cover off.
