Why Did Spartans Become So Militaristic? Was it out of fear and self defense?

Hi guys,

I'm doing an essay on the Spartans, and I'm just wondering why the Spartans were so militaristic?
Did they do it in order to protect themselves or in order to become the best city state?
Did they do it out of fear?
