Chile's economic crisis? Between the elections of 1970 and 73' in Chile the United States, in coalition with Chile's neighboring countries, whose dictatorships were financed and controlled by Washington, imposed a trade embargo on the country. In addition they financed transport strikes that effectively grounded the Chilean economy to a halt.

By causing economic chaos America hoped to destabilise the country and force the downfall of Allende's socialist government. Why then, considering that the economy was indeed left in ruins, did Allende's popularity GROW in the March 73' elections?

This is particularly baffling considering the national media was at best split 50/50 between American influenced anti-Allende sentiment and Soviet influenced pro-Allende sentiment.

It seems unlikely that the massively uneducated majority of Chili understood that the crisis was born from external factors and not the government itself, and even if they did, why would they care if a vote against Allende would end the poverty?
