Why did old civilization use special markes near there tomps?

Usually with markings on Tombs and so forth are stories written (drawn) to illustrate the story behind what took place or who the Tomb is for. Some can be of the Religions that they believe but most are of writings and stories.

some old tomps have markes as holes,holy cros.animales pictures and insictes ...why?
