Why did my windows media player stop working?

Our media player was working just not too long ago...It suddenly stopped and I don't know why...you can't play music or videos or anything. We've tried upgrading, it didn't work, what else can we do?
 
Remove windows media player from control panel - add or remove programs. Then redownload windows media player and restart. It should work otherwise use vlc media player. http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html It does the same thing.
