Why did my mom's period cycle change to every two weeks........?

my mom is 49years old approaching 50. All her life she has had regular cycles until the last three months when her periods begun to show up every two weeks like clockwork. What can be the cause of this? As far as I know, she does not have any outstanding health problems with the exception of painful periods. Could it have anything to do with menopause?
