Why did my control arm bushings go bad on my 2000 Dodge neon?

My control arm bushings and ball joints went bad on my 2000 dodge neon about 6 months ago. I decided to just replace both control arms instead of replacing each individual part. I just went to put new brakes on my car an noticed that the control arm bushings are ripping out on both sides. I am thinking that there may be other issues causing these to go bad. I also noticed that the rubber on the torque strut mounts are starting to tear. I am not sure that these are related - one is suspension and one is engine. What could cause a control arm bushing to bad in less than 6 months? Are these just garbage parts on the control arm? Would a heavy duty bushing work(if they make one)?
Thanks for every-ones help
I did tighten it with the car raised in the air. I believe that you have to because both tires have to come off to remove and install the control arm. I suppose that I might be able to leave the bolt through the bushing loose.
