Why did my 1998 Chevy Astro van die?

Okay, it was 101 degrees outside. My 1998 chevy astro van suddenly stalled out and died while sitting in traffic that was moving at a snails pace because of road construction. Some guys helped me push it into a storage unit parking lot. The gas gauge doesn't work, so I put a gallon of gas in it, in case it had simply run out. It had been sitting for 20-30 min while I went to get the gas. After putting the gas in, it started right up, but died again before I got out of the parking lot. I let it sit for a couple of minutes, then was able to start it back up, so I backed it into the parking lot again. It died again just as I rolled into my parking spot. I tried to start it again, but it wouldn't start. So I waited about 10 min, and then it started again, and continued to run. All seemed well, so I pulled out and headed home. I got stuck in road construction traffic again, so I only made it about a quarter mile before it died again. So I left it there over night. The next morning I went down to it and it started right up. I drove it home (about a half mile) with no problem. Haven't tried to drive it since.

I'm afraid to drive it. What could this be?

When I ran out of gas I put more than a gallon in it. It did seem to start different after that. I think you should put more gas in it to be safe. My gas gauge doesn't work either so go fill it up and don't drive more than 300 miles on a tank.
