why did Henry VIII break away from the roman Catholic Church?

He wanted a divorce and didn't like having Catholic authority higher than him.

He blamed his wife for not giving him a son to be his heir, so he wanted to divorce her. Catholics do not allow for divorce, so if he was going to marry another woman and have a legitimate heir, he had to break away from Rome to make divorce allowed.

Henry wanted more power for himself and England. He, like the other kings of his day, were under the authority of Rome. They, in essence, had to comply with the commands of Rome or they faced severe problems. He didn't want to be ruled from Rome, so he took this as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

because he had sand in his pants that was really making him feel bad because he ate at taco bell and got bad service

He wanted an anulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, so that he could marry Anne Boleyn. The Catholic church did quite frequently grant annulments for various reasons, but the Pope would not grant one to Henry, partly at least because he did not want to offend Catherine of Aragon's nephew, Charles, who was Holy roman emperor and a major power in Europe. So Henry broke away from the Catholic church and set up the Church of England with himself as head.

He was at the same time able to dissolve the monasteries, and seize their wealth, thus enriching himself and his nobles, which was another inducement to him to break away.
